The Edward A. Dickson Emeritus/a Professorship Award

The Award:
Created by a gift endowment from the late Edward A. Dickson, Regent of the University of California from 1913 to 1946, the Dickson Emeritus Professorship Award honors outstanding research, scholarly work, teaching, or public service activities by a UCSF emeritus/a professor that have continued since retirement. The highest priority is for support of activities that benefit the campus and for which funding is not available from other sources.

The awardee(s) shall be known as the Edward A. Dickson Emeritus/a Professor for the duration of the award. At the end of the award period, awardee(s) will submit a concise written report of the accomplishments that have resulted from the Professorship as well as how the funds were used.

Each UC campus receives funds to support one or more awards each year.  Each award is for a maximum of $10,000 and is made to the Emeritus/a Professor for the upcoming two (2) fiscal years. The award may be used for any purpose in conformity with University of California guidelines.  However, funds may not be used for recall salary.

All emeritus/a faculty in all series, including those on recall, are eligible to apply. Activities which may be recognized by the Award include any area of teaching, research or public service, whether or not it is directly related to the nominee’s previous career accomplishments.

Application Packet must include the following:

  1. Application form (PDF or MS Word) to be completed electronically) 
  2. Summary of the proposal. The summary must be in 11 or 12 point type, and may not exceed two pages, single-spaced, including any figures, tables and references. 
  3. NIH or equivalent biosketch (not to exceed 4 pages).
  4. Separate budget page that outlines in detailhow the funds will be used.

Application Review Process: 
The Vice Provost, Academic Affairs will appoint a Review Committee, composed of emeritus/a faculty from all four schools.  The Review Committee will rank the applications and make recommendations to the Vice Provost, who shall make the final decision.  Review Committee members are not eligible to apply for the Award in the year they serve on the Committee.  The recipients will be announced in April.
