Meet the Mentor: Sally Marshall, PhD

Ask the Vice-Provost of Academic Affairs and recipient of the 2011 Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award your questions about advancement and promotion. This is a special opportunity for faculty to address their individual concerns in an informal, small group setting. Bring your lunch and Dr. Marshall will share her expertise.

Mentor Training Workshop: Teaching Observation Program (TOP)
Thursday, January 17 / Noon – 1:30 p.m. / Parnassus - UCSF Library 2nd Floor, Room CL 211 & 212
Presenters: Katherine Hyland, PhD and Kathleen Land- Academy of Medical Educators
Learn how to mentor your peers about teaching. Participants will improve their observation, evaluation and feedback communication skills through group discussion, practice and the use of materials specifically developed for training mentors in distinct teaching modalities. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to: describe the elements of effective feedback, describe the TOP process (preparation, evaluation and feedback), evaluate a teaching session and compose feedback for the instructor and effectively deliver feedback to the instructor. Workshop includes video demonstration, group discussion, practice session.

Leadership Skills for Successful Mentoring

Presenters: Rupinder Buttar, Janet Coffman, Dan Dohan, Ellen Haller, Colin Partridge
Learn from faculty members and CORO Leadership alumni about state-of-the-art leadership tools and their application to successful mentoring, including tools for planning meetings, managing interpersonal dynamics, balancing inquiry and advocacy, and receiving feedback. With active demonstration and lively discussion, attendees will walk away with practical techniques for improving their mentoring experience.

Speed Mentoring for Postdocs
Wednesday, January 30 / 3:30 p.m. – 5 p.m. / Mission Bay - Genentech Hall, Room N-114 & Atrium
Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, UCSF Graduate Division
A fun, fast-paced event in which postdocs will have several ten-minute, one-on-one mentoring sessions with a variety of expert mentors, who will share invaluable advice on topics such as career strategies, work-life balance issues, grant writing, and more. Registration required.
