Faculty Mentoring Program

Who Mentored You?

Patricia Benner, RN, PhD, FAAN

I was recruited as the Department Chair of Family Health Care Nursing in August 1999. I came from Canada, and even though I had gone to school in the US, I had never been a faculty member within the American system; there was much I had to learn...I didn't even know what an "RO1" was! But, I soon learned that it was something that I should seek, and especially as a Chair, I felt the responsibility of doing myself what I was encouraging my faculty to do. I organized a meeting with some of more senior colleagues to obtain advice - Patricia Benner was one of those present. When she realized I had no idea of what an RO1 grant proposal even entailed, she sent to me a copy of her most recent NIH proposal. I had never experienced such generosity of spirit from a colleague. I have since seen many such proposals, and have obtained my own RO1 funding...but the course towards that success was set in motion by Dr. Benner's colleagueship, generosity, and inspiring mentorship.
