Faculty Mentoring Program

Who Mentored You?

Catherine Chesla, RN, DNSc, FAAN

I wanted to tell you a little about my mentor, Kit Chesla, Professor in the Department of Family Health Care Nursing. After completing a post-doc at UCSF, I started my faculty career elsewhere, but after a few years was fortunate enough to come back to UCSF. It is a bit nerve-wracking to move from a more teaching intensive setting to the research intensive environment of UCSF, but Kit [Chesla] has shown me the path, and provided the consultation that I needed to succeed in this system. The ability to discuss opportunities, collaborate on projects, and receive valuable feedback about my work and decisions has given me the concrete tools to progress in my efforts as a researcher and teacher; and, her unfailing support and guidance has given me the confidence to attempt new challenges, recover from disappointments, and persist in efforts toward meeting my goals. Kit is a sterling example of hard work, integrity, creativity, strategic thinking, and fairness. The mentoring I have received from Kit Chesla is an integral component of my career progression.
