Faculty Mentoring Program

Who Mentored You?

Cherrie B. Boyer, PhD

I have been exceedingly fortunate to have so many outstanding mentors at UCSF. I had very little experience in research before coming to UCSF, and Mary-Ann B. Shafer, MD immediately welcomed me into her well-established research group. She has supported me in all of my endeavors from the start, and has shown me all the steps of research, from formulating a research question to giving oral presentations at national conferences and publishing. At times when I feel “stuck”, I can go to her for guidance to get “unstuck”! Cherrie B. Boyer, PhD has been a true role model by setting very rigorous standards for research but at the same time providing me the careful constructive critique, expertise, and unwavering support to meet those high standards. Working with Cherrie has taught me to be bold and to aim high! Anna-Barbara Moscicki, MD has so generously invested her time, care, and effort to encourage creativity from me and to help me take the exciting risk of delving into very new areas of research. I’ve benefited enormously from her experience garnered during her successful career and her insights regarding the NIH process. She has been like an expert tutor to me! Charles E. Irwin, Jr., MD and Susan (“Shana”) Millstein, PhD have kindly guided me through the spectrum of decisions at all different points in my research and career path while also pushing me to better pinpoint my specific goals along the way. My UCSF experience has been so rich because of the combination of mentors who constantly inspire me and have made themselves available to me despite their other complex commitments. I am so indebted to all of these accomplished UCSF faculty who really have my best interest at heart!
